DO YOUR PART , GO GREEN

Would you dare go green to this extent?

Vegetated roofs, or green roofs have a layer of living plants on top of the structure and the waterproofing elements.

There are really two types of green roofs, intensive and extensive.Intensive green roofs often have a soil depth of a foot or more.
Extensive roofs are much shallower, typically only 2 to 4 inches deep.

Helps save on energy and makes a nice vegetable garden.
My favorite, nice flat roof and a fence too.

Different and Beautiful.

But I'm afraid if I tried it, mine would look like this.

You can read all about it here.

interesting..

but i have a quick question - what happens during winter when the grass turns brown and falls off...

will it still be pretty?
will it still be energy efficient?
will it still be cost efficient???

Just curious...

pamelastitch,
The grass may turn brown, but it still has roots in the ground, so it just stops growing . Then comes spring and it starts growing again.

Nice idea but maintaining the 'lawn on the roof' will be hard work

Babawilly,
You'd have to read the article somewhere in there I think it says a little something about how to maintain it.

Becky,
No room for a garden, just put it on the roof. lol

How do we know,
It really is interesting, I didn't know they were doing it already until I fell upon this site.

"Do your part. go green"
a color soothing to the eye
thus centers on the spectrum screen.

There is a house near where my parents live that has a roof like that. It's been there for years. I guess I finally understand it.

Damsel Underdressed,
Oh wow, interesting, they must have been in on this global warming thing from the start. It costs a fortune to do that.

this is a very smart idea .. many people might now have backyards .. but everyone has a roof. It not only helps the environment but also looks beautiful.
